DODD, LIEBERMAN ANNOUNCE $2.8 MILLION FOR AIDS PATIENTS

July 12, 2001

Washington, D.C. — Senators Chris Dodd and Joe Lieberman, both D-Conn., today announced nearly $3 million in federal support for Connecticut organizations that provide housing and support services for those diagnosed with HIV or AIDS.

"Those coping with HIV clearly need a roof over their heads, but these innovative initiatives do so much more," said Dodd. "Basic medical care, job training, financial and emotional support will help ensure that people are able to live stable, productive lives."

"These grants will provide the integrated care that is so vital to people living with AIDS," Lieberman said. "Putting resources into such programs not only strengthens those they reach, but also builds up the communities around them."

The City of Bridgeport Social Services Department will receive over $1 million for its unique Transitional Living Program, which targets over two hundred individuals and families living with HIV, mental illness, and chronic drug or alcohol abuse. The city collaborates with seven project sponsors to provide participants with food, emergency medical care, job training, temporary housing, and financial support as they transition into permanent housing. Prospect House, Bethel Recovery Center, and Alpha Home provide housing; Helping Hand Center, Catholic Family Services, and Evergreen Network provide support services; and the Connecticut AIDS Residence Coalition provides technical assistance and resource identification services. The grant was awarded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) Program.

Three other organizations in New Haven and Bridgeport were awarded funding under a separate grant program to provide cutting-edge, early-intervention medical, behavioral health, and dental care for adults and children with HIV. Hill Health Corporation (New Haven, CT) received $563,875; Southwest Community Health Center (Bridgeport, CT) received $492,975; and the Bridgeport Community Health Center received $516,868. The grants were awarded through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources and Services Administration.
